Formula Ford Festival Report - 2011

MALVERN WINS FESTIVAL & PAYS TRIBUTE TO DAN WHELDON

Scott Malvern capped a superbly successful season with victory at Brands Hatch in the BRSCC’s Formula Ford Festival. The 22-year-old from Essex qualified on pole and won his heat, quarter final and semi-final races before beating Dutch driver Steijn Schothorst to the chequered flag by 0.4s in the Duratec final.

It was a brilliant swansong performance by Malvern for the Jamun Racing team, with whom he had already won the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Champion of Great Britain in dominant fashion.

“It couldn’t have gone any better for me,” said Scott. “This was the one I wanted to win all year. The plan was to try to run away and hide and I nearly achieved that. I struggled a bit for pace early on in the final but was just able to keep Steijn behind. It’s a great end to my Formula Ford season.”

But Malvern’s joy was dampened by the news from the USA of the death in an IndyCar crash of 33-year-old Dan Wheldon. Like Malvern, Wheldon’s junior career was nurtured in Formula Ford; Wheldon was Formula Ford Festival runner-up in 1998, finishing behind the driver who would go on to become World Champion in 2009, Jenson Button.

Ballymena’s Ivor McCullough took a well-deserved win in the Kent Final, the seasoned Festival campaigner finishing ahead of Scotsman Kenneth Thirlwall. Team USA Scholarship driver Neil Alberico was third across the line. In the opening laps, the highly rated Californian had recovered from a clash at Druids with Canadian pole-sitter Xavier Coupal that ended the latter’s race.

Neil Tofts was back atop of the Zetec podium to record his third victory in the Final. Tofts cruised to victory in his Mygale SJ04 but the main story of the race was Festival returnee Rick Morris at the age of 65 driving from the back of the grid after a race one shunt to claim second in his Van Diemen RF01. At the other end of the age scale, 17-year-old Ashley Dibden showed great maturity in his Ray97 to take third spot on the podium.

The World Cup was won by Australia with the team comprising of Nick McBride, Geoff Uhrhane and Spike Goddard.

Results of the meeting can be found at CLICK HERE

The 2012 Festival will take place on the weekend of the 27th/28th October.

Not long now . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The BRSCC South Eastern Centre's presence at one of the most prestigious race meetings of the year will see the 40th anniversary of the world famous BRSCC Formula Ford Festival celebrated at Brands Hatch over the weekend of the 15th and 16th October. The festival needs no introduction and attracts many famous motorsport personalities and many of the worlds crop of single seater competitors. Backing up the Formula Fords will be the highly acclaimed Ford Fiesta Championship and also featuring the newest racing for 14 - 16 year olds, Fiesta Junior.

The weekend has become an iconic event with the attention of the world's motorsport media in attendance. The racing will probably receive as much attention in the press as many 'larger' race events.

In the paddock, refreshments will be provided for all marshals and Fiesta competitors/teams in the form of tea coffee etc. You will be welcome to use the facility over the weekend and we just ask to keep it tidy. The refreshment point will be in the Ford Racing UK/Fiesta Championship race centre in the lower paddock. Look for the BRSCC and FORD flags flying.

Don't forget the Saturday night relaxed dinner to celebrate the 40th Formula Ford Festival with many celebrities attending. Contact Dominic at the BRSCC.

The friendly face of the BRSCC

The BRSCC South Eastern Centre's third race meeting of the season took place September 10/11 at Lydden Hill.

The friendly face of the BRSCC was in evidence as refreshments in the BRSCC hospitality marquee were provided for drivers and marshals. This will be carried on to the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch on October 15/16. Any official/marshal/ Fiesta competitor will be invited to use the refreshment area for tea and coffee during the weekend. The BRSCC marquee will be attached to the Ford Racing UK Race Centre in the lower paddock.

BRSCC official and South Eastern committee member Richard Sneader was also busy sounding out Lydden Hill track owners about the viability of the centre running a big sprint meeting in 2012. Both parties reached an outline agreement to have further talks to work out a plan of action that would see the BRSCC widening its involvement in motorsport. This is part of an ongoing initiative from the SE centre committee to be more pro-active in 2012 and maximise their input in motorsport.

Good sports at Brands Hatch

The BRSCC South Eastern Centre's second race meeting of the season took place August 13 and 14 with the BRSCC Sportscar Race Weekend on Brands Hatch's 1.199 mile Indy Circuit. Saturday started damp, but brightened up. Sunday remained fine, despite the presence of threatening clouds.

Out of an 18-race programme, Saturday’s action featured just five events. The opening 25-minute Saker Challenge qualifier was boosted by some Invitation class cars, with Ian Dockerill's Kia pro_cee'd heading home Saker supremo Paul Rose, also claiming the day's second half-hour outing. Dockerill's absence on Sunday allowed Rose to pick up victory in race three, but gearbox maladies for Rose in the final race saw Paul Spencer's ProSport LM3000 victorious.

The three-hour FunCup race was dominated by the Team Honeywell pairing of Neil Plimmer and Geoff Fawcett, which headed home the trio of Julian Thomas, Nigel Greensall and Joachim Ritter.

Doncaster's Rob Boston finished well clear of Cardiff's Tom Roche in the first 17-minute Ma5da MX5 Cup race, but could do no better than third in Sunday's race two, won by former Formula Ford Festival winner Chrissy Palmer.

Both Design911.com races were scheduled for 20 minutes. Southampton's David Clark's Porsche Boxster took overall honours ahead of Leeds' Richard Styrin, with fellow home-town man Adam Croft claiming 924 class honours. Sunday's race two was red-flagged early following a nasty Brabham Straight shunt. The top two remained the same, with Banbury's Steven Brown top 924 runner.

The massed ranks of Ma5da MX5 Championship runners had five 20-minute races, each driver having two outings. All five were crackers. The first qualifier saw Roche finally climb the top step of the podium ahead of Cannock's Wayne Le Montais. Race two fell to Towcester's Jordan Stilp ahead of Stanley's Alan Henderson. Race three victor was Radford's Adam Gore, with Henderson once again runner up. Race four marked a double victory for Stilp ahead of Farnham's James Blake-Baldwin. Roche also made it two wins in Sunday's meeting-closing race five ahead of Gore, with the victory margin a mere 0.028 seconds!

Joining Sunday's bill were runners in the Avon Tyres BRSCC Formula Ford 1600 Triple Crown, which also counted towards the FF1600 National Championship. Chris Middlehurst showed his undoubted talent by guiding his Van Diemen LA10 to victory in the first 20-minute encounter head off the Ray GRK 09 of USA's Abdul Ahmed. He fended off firstly Ahmed and then Dubliner Cormac O'Neill in race two. O'Neill's runner-up slot was enough to clinch the Triple Crown.

Also just appearing on Sunday was the BRSCC Production GTi Series. Knutsford's Simon Hill won the first 15-minute encounter in his VW Golf GTi 16v, ahead of Wimborne's Nick Porter. Dawn Boyd was the 8v class winner. Race two had the same outcome.

The Centre hosted a Curry Evening in the Kentagon on Saturday night, with some 130 marshals, competitors and guests enjoying the dishes on offer. Thanks to Mandy Scott and her colleagues at MSV for looking after us, and to Secretary of the Meeting Judith Hibbins for co-ordinating the logistics.

With two of our regular Senior Clerks of the Course tied up elsewhere for some or whole of the meeting, we were pleased to welcome Glyn Lee from Midlands Centre (also permanent Clerk for the Ma5das) and John Baldwin, who has helped us out at Lydden Hill previously, to bolster Barry Morris's clerking team. Julian Floyd looked after the Sakers and FunCup.

RAINY DAYS & SUNDAYS

The BRSCC South Eastern Centre's first race meeting of the season took place June 11th and 12th with the Caterham Academy 2011 Race Début weekend on Brands Hatch's 1.199 mile Indy Circuit. Saturday remained fine throughout but conditions on Sunday got progressively wetter!

Saturday’s action featured seven races, with BRSCC Euro Saloon & Sportscar runners scheduled to race over 20 minutes. A dramatic engine-bay fire sidelined second-place man Dave Cockell's Escort Cosworth, and the intensity of the blaze saw an early result declared behind the Safety Car. Walton-on-Thames' Richard Hawken took the spoils in his Nissan Primera Super Tourer.

Londoner Hugh Marshall overcame the ignominy of a Green Flag lap spin and a tardy start to take Dunlop TVR Challenge honours in his Tuscan, but it took him until lap 9 in the 20-minute encounter to nose ahead of Weston-Super Mare's Andy Race's Tuscan RV8. Another poor start in Sunday's drizzly outing delayed Marshall's victory progress until lap 12.

The massed ranks of Avon Tyres Caterham Supersport runners were split into three groups, with Bs and Cs first up on Saturday afternoon. 30 minutes of frantic, nose to tail action ensued, with Pelsall's Reece Summerfield ahead when it mattered, leading home Burnham's Ian Payne. Londoner Jamie Orton mastered changeable track conditions to claim Sunday's C vs. A battle, and made it a brace of victories in the B vs. A race.

A mid-race coming together took out potential winners in the 20-minute BRSCC Super Mighty Mini qualifier. Lee-on-the Solent's Gary Patterson headed home a seven-car leading train. Persistent rain on Sunday made Norwich man Jonathan Lewis's victory run much easier.

Avon Tyres Caterham Roadsport (B vs. C) competitors were joined by nine Caterham Holland Supersport runners for their 20-minute race. Bishops Stortford's Wesley Fox took overall honours, with Toon Rutgers claiming his class. Sunday's A vs. C curtain-raiser went the way of Brisbaner Kurt Brady, Rutgers again topped the Dutch runners. The B vs. A encounter fell the way of Colchester's Aaron Head, Rutgers making it a hat-trick of category wins.

Northampton's Adrian Tuckley and Londoner Peter Tervet enjoyed a race-long scrap in the BRSCC Mighty Minis, championship leader Tuckley ahead after 20 minutes. Tervet went one better in Sunday's damp outing after Tuckley went off twice on lap 1.

With the Le Mans 24 Hours taking place the same weekend, it was fitting that the sports prototypes in the BRSCC OSS Championship closed Saturday's proceedings. A demon overtaking manoeuvre by Caerphilly's Graham Cole counted for nought as his Jade Trackstar coasted to a halt minutes later, handing victory to Merstham's Tony Sinclair's similar car. Sinclair doubled up on Sunday, ahead of Vernham Dean's Simon Tilling's Radical SRT. Simon was a BRSCC marshal (often on Post 6) between 1982 and 1989.

Rod Birley's Escort Cosworth pounced on Nissan Skyline-mounted Darren Bly's hesitation while lapping backmarkers to take a last lap victory in Sunday's first 14-minute Dunlop Motorsport News race. Last lap gearbox woes for Birley reversed the positions in the day's last race.

Elliot Norris fell foul of a spinning backmarker in the Autosport Caterham Academy Championship Group 1 race, handing a last lap victory to Londoner Charles Bowmont at the conclusion of 14 minutes. Conditions were much more treacherous for the subsequent Group 2 event, claimed by Edenbridge's Andrew Welch.

Rain fell throughout the 20-minute BRSCC Alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship race, but failed to disrupt Eckington's Neil Smith's 156 World Touring Car's progress towards victory.

With June 12 marking the start of National Diabetes Week, we were pleased to support Diabetes UK by donating funds raised from a lunchtime motorcade of Lotus Owners Club cars to the charity. We also welcomed members of Circle D, a local self-help group for young adult diabetics. They enjoyed tours of the Control Tower and presented garlands and trophies to winning drivers.

The next BRSCC South Eastern Centre race meeting is at Brands Hatch on August 13-14 for the BRSCC Car Championships.

BRSCC SE Centre Annual Invitation Quiz Night

As a pre-season warm-up, we are organising our annual Quiz night in the Kentagon at Brands Hatch on the evening of Tuesday the 8th March 2011.

As usual we are extending the invitation to other clubs in the South-East and also to teams entered by or on behalf of competitors from BRSCC Racing Championships. It is intended to be an entertaining and amusing evening with our usual excellent Quizmaster John Tillott who has sacrificed a trip to Australia to be with us! And remember your team of six will be competing for the BRSCC SE CENTRE QUIZ-NIGHT TROPHY (perpetual or as long as it lasts)!

A splendid trophy which we hope will be returned on the night by last years winners is the target for all of those entering teams, we hope they will enter into a spirit of friendly competition, and join us for the evening. A welcoming glass of wine or Orange juice will be on offer on arrival and trays of sandwiches and nibbles will be offered to help those who have not had time to go home before the evening begins. The following is a draft timetable but in time honoured motorsport tradition – ‘the organisers reserve the right to alter…………’ (you know the usual sort of thing)!

Teams of six (give yourselves a name) are requested to register with us by email to Brian Jones at bj@brianjones.net by the 3rd March so that we have a good idea how many people we should expect.  Five or Six wide ranging motorsport themed rounds of ten questions each, plus one General Knowledge round, will be put to the teams in reasonably quick-fire time. At the end of each round teams will exchange their answer sheets with a team close-by, though NOT with a table from the same club or race team, whilst the Quiz-Master goes through the correct answers. Each team will chose in advance a JOKER round when they will shoot for DOUBLE points.

The judge’s decision will be final. If the judge does mistakenly permit an appeal to be lodged the appeal fee will be that the appellant team must buy everyone present a drink!!  Referral to the MSA is specifically BANNED. One of the rounds may be a pictorial round or pictures may be interspersed in all rounds. There will be one ‘rallying’ round.

Proposed evening format

BRSCC SE Raffle Prize to Chesnut Tree House Childrens Hospice

Saturday 11th December at the Brands Hatch Kentagon, and the BRSCC SE Centre Awards saw the popular raffle benefit from an extra prize donated by Fiesta driver Mark Tilbury. The prize was a Scalextric GT race kit and was promptly won by Symon Cockill (father of Fiesta racing brothers - Harry and Ed). Very graciously, Symon has donated the prize to a West Sussex Childrens Hospice - Chesnut Treet House, where he hopes the Scalextric game will help the children, who find themselves recovering from illnesses, ease the time spent there.

CATERHAMS ADD SPICE TO BRANDS FEAST

The second and final BRSCC South Eastern Centre meeting of the season took place over the weekend of August 21 and 22 with a 19-race programme using Brands Hatch’s 1.2 mile Indy Circuit. Saturday’s BRSCC Saab City’ Race Weekend dawned close and overcast, with intermittent light drizzle, before the sun broke through mid-afternoon. Sunday looked more promising, but rain arrived just before the Lunch Break, leaving a drying track for the rest of proceedings.

Caterhams were in abundance, with the Avon Tyres Supersports runners kicking off the race schedule. Less than a second separated the top four after 30 minutes of frantic action, Londoner James Machlachlan heading home Maidenhead’s Ian Forsyth. Sunday’s encounter provided the same outcome.

Avon Tyres Caterham Roadsport A competitors followed, with another half-hour tussle. Leeds’ JJ O’Malley’s margin of victory over Antony Sidney-Woolett was altogether more comfortable. Londoner Jamie Orton was leading when a Red Flag foreshortened Sunday’s rain-afflicted race.

A broken cam belt kept poleman Tim Lewis out of the BRSCC Alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship 20 minute races, making Neil Smith’s initial victory in his 156 World Touring car much easier, the Eckington man lapping the entire field. A heavy downpour barely impeded his Sunday stroll to the Chequered Flag.

The Avon Tyres Caterham Roadsport B 20-minute race centred on a three-car lead battle between Yarm’s Martin Addison, Lee Wiggins and Reece Somerfield, finishing in that order. The same trio were at the sharp end of Sunday’s 15 minute restarted race, with Horndon on the Hill’s Wiggins just pipping Addison.

Making their first appearance at Brands were the BookaTrack.com Caterham Superlight R300 contestants. Three cars were always in contention during the half hour race, Newbury’s Paul Wilson taking the honours. London’s Trevor Fowell climbed from 19th on the grid to clinch Race Two, extending his points lead.

Rounding off Saturday’s action was the first of two 20-minute races for the Avon Tyres BRSCC Formula Ford 1600 Southern Championship in association with REIS. Oz invader Jordan Skinner was the class of the field in his Ray GRK10 and repeated the treatment on Sunday.

Competition Car Insurance Ford Fiesta Class A & B runners opened Sunday’s batting with a 20-minute innings, Heathfield’s Ed Cockhill converting his pole position into a comfortable win, despite a Safety Car intervention, brother Harry taking Class B. Horsham’s Rex Nye won Race Two, despite having to contend with a drying track and a Safety Car, Harry upholding family honours with a second Class B win.

The first Class C only race saw Leicester’s David Grady emerge ahead of Jeremy Gumbley after 20 minutes of unusually tame racing. Dorking man Gumbley reversed the placings in a much harder fought Race Two.

Victory in the sole Pistonheads.com Caterham Academy Championship Group 2 15-minute qualifier fell to Northants’ Ross Macindoe. Group 1 spoils were claimed by Bishops Stortford’s Wesley Fox after Mike Hart was excluded from his race win.

Closing the programme was a 15-minute Champion of Brands Formula Ford 1600 race. Jordan Skinner made it a hat-trick of wins, ahead of Adam Quartermaine’s Van Diemen RF90.

Special thanks go to the kind folks at Caterham Motorsport, who invited Centre marshals and officials to join them in the Kentagon on Saturday for a Curry Evening. Some 30 thirsty and hungry souls thoroughly enjoyed their Ruby Murrays and a couple of pints.
